Hello, valiant survivor from the Battle for Hilare! The first Shriek has fallen, but a new threat did not take long to appear. Although our heroes imposed their might over the hideous Deafscreech, they haven’t had a single moment to celebrate: Hurry up! Open those Chests, get rid of excess weight, and march to Zandemyr: A terrible Groundspiker awaits you there.

Some of you, even after the fall of the Deafscreech that filled your hands with new treasures, face some insecurities on things like: Which item to throw away? Why do Gems give no combat attributes? But don’t despair: I will now proceed to explain a little more about how the Gear works so that you can optimize your decision-making progress.

(If you haven’t read it by now, I strongly recommend you to take a look to the general rules for our Loyalty Program that you can find in this post.)

Let’s, then, start from the beginning. The first thing you should know is that there are two groups of things you can find inside a Chest: on-chain assets for Echoes of Cryptalia and combat items to play within the Loyalty Program.

About the first ones you don’t even have to worry: Whenever you get an on-chain asset, it’s automatically saved in your Keepsake so you can claim it when we launch Echoes of Cryptalia. The only off-chain asset that behaves like this is Phonite, our soft currency, that you can see represented by the F-Clef that’s right above the leaderboard. Whenever you get one, just chill and celebrate, because they are and will be safe.

The “in-Loyalty Program” items, on the other hand, obey game rules that we are set to review below. Let’s dive in!

Gear: A Pile to Optimize

As you know, combat items go to your Gear. They arrive in the same order as the user received them & that order can’t be altered. This is a crucial aspect of the system, because only the first 6 items in your Gear are considered to be equipped by your Champion and give you benefits in combat. Also, only those 6 equipped items contribute to your Champion’s Total Star Rating.

If you want to equip items that are beyond the sixth slot, you must then drop a sufficient number of items so that they disappear from your Gear pile and allow the items further away to take their place.

Don’t know what to keep? To help you decide which items to keep and which to drop, we will explain each of the components that characterize them.

Items are divided into 9 Tiers

Every combat item belong to one of 9 Tiers. The higher the Tier of an item, the higher its quality.

Each Tier also has a different color frame, which helps you recognize at first glance which items correspond to which quality.

Star Rating

Each combat item is created with a random Star Rating. The star rating has zero effects during combat, but it slowly becomes more & more important as we get closer to the end of the first Chapter of the Loyalty Program, set to last 60 days from launch.

In addition to combat items, you may also find Gemstones inside chests. These gems have a Star Rating proportional to their Tier and pose a real dilemma for our adventurers: If you want to keep them until the end, you would have to dedicate a significant portion of your Gear to get a hold of them.

When Chapter 1 of the Loyalty Program ends, players who have a Gear with a Total Star Rating greater than 30 will be rewarded with special Echoes of Cryptalia NFTs. The higher your Total Star Rating, the better the reward!

Attack Items

Attack items have a different nature depending on their type: you can find anything, from a book of ice Chants to a poisoned dagger. Since every Shriek is designed to have weaknesses and resistances, the damage type of the Gear you take into battle has a deep impact on the total damage that your Champion deals to the creature. Pay close attention to each Shriek’s description, since they reveal what you are going to face after you optimize your Gear and head into battle.

Defense Items

Defense Items enhance your resistance to Shriek attacks. Although the health of your Champion is not directly shown during combat, Champions facing Shrieks have a finite amount of health points. Whenever they are exhausted from damage taken, they stop attacking during a certain amount of time as they receive assistance from the Ordained Healers, specialists that patch your Champions back to fighting shape. If you choose your Defense Items with caution, taking into account the characteristics of the Shriek you are going to face, you will attack your opponent more and you’ll need less healing time!

Rings of Regeneration

There is a particular class of items that increases your Regeneration Rate. This also allows you to spend more time in combat and less time in recovery. They also allow you to extract even more value from your defense items.

Cloaks & Dodge

There are cloaks that allow you to increase your evasion rate. This also allows you to be present longer in combat as you avoid some of the damage you would take if you didn’t have these items.

That’s about it on what you need to know about Items. Oh, one last thing: Remember to read very well the description of each item and each Shriek you face. We plan on making trivias about the lore of Echoes of Cryptalia in our Discord server and we have taken advantage of every instance we can to give you a glimpse of this fantastic world.

See you on the next article!
