I’m not sure if it was during an impromptu meeting, the unscheduled kind, which only happen when a precise question invites discussion and suddenly the team is theorizing in a voice channel. It might’ve been in a “more serious” meeting: every camera turned on in a Google meet, taking turns to speak. Whichever the case, we were talking about Heroes’ Skill Sets and ways to make them truly unique through their identities when I came up with the idea. A method that I would use to determine the GENESIS Collection’s internal distribution.
The criteria was straight-forward: It should respond to rigid limits given by immovable numbers, such as the number of Heroes in each Macroclass and the presence of hometowns in the collection. At the same time, it allowed the rich Lore of Echoes of Cryptalia to express itself through the many characteristics that shape our Heroes. I invite you all to take this opportunity and listen to the towns that we’ll introduce in our GENESIS Collection speak.
The first step was easy to walk: With a total of 3,000 Heroes, 750 were fated to be Asskickers, Tricksters, Paktbounds and Wisedudes (750×4=3,000). On the other hand, 1,000 of the Heroes should be Mountain Elves, the same as Witness Humans and High Voidlings (1,000×3=3,000).
The distribution of other features, such as their Hometown and Class, should respond to the lore and be a reflection of it so that players have an organic experience of the demographics of our fantasy universe, as soon as they immerse in it. In this article we will reveal the distribution but it’s necessary first to pay a short visit to each of the Hometowns that form The Witness Kingdoms.
Utûl’s Rising
Utûl’s Rising, commonly known as The Port-City, was founded over the ashes of Phyrr, the Old Capital. Completely destroyed during The First Hybris, Witness Humans and High Voidlings rebuilt it and named it after Utûl, Great Performer of the Voidlings during the war, who rose against Ischuros. He freed the city of his Chant and paid his insolence with his life.
The Port-City’s population of Witness Humans is slightly larger than that of High Voidlings. The presence of Mountain Elves is much smaller, given the cultural difficulties this people have in adapting to coastal life.
Andessia
Andessia Imperiae is the traditional Mountain Elf capital city. Built on top of what used to be the highest peak of its mountain range (until The Great Arbiter’s Perpetual Staccato birthed the majestic Kü), it’s ruled by an ancient Imperator bloodline: the Stratoradix.
There are also Witness Humans and High Voidlings here but their presence is almost nil.
Tezanoplas
When The First Hybris came to an end, the vast majority of High Voidlings went on to built Tezanoplas in the Northern Highlands, closest to sunlight. They crowned Zazine, the Free King & Utûl’s grandson, to rule over the bronze city.
If Andessia is the land of Mountain Elves, Tezanoplas is the land of High Voidlings.
Chonchi
Of the three human kingdoms of old, Chonchi was the only one that resisted The First Hybris. No longer a kingdom, the cosmopolitan city is now ruled by the Nine Heir Protectors, representatives of different administrative branches, including the Magistrate of the Council of Echoes.
In Chonchi, the Witness Humans are majority, although not as dominant as the Mountain Elves in Andessia or the High Voidlings in Tezanoplas. Those who occupy the least percentage of these lands are High Voidlings.
STOCKADES — Asskickers
In this collection, we will see Asskickers that, before swearing their allegiance to a Master Tactician, fulfilled their duty as STOCKADES for their Hometowns. Brave soldiers, both wall & spear, they make up the guard of their cities. Thus, in the GENESIS Collection we’ll see 4 different STOCKADES, one per Hometown.
HAWKERS — Tricksters
HAWKERS are adventurers specialized in tracking and hunting. A HAWKER is nomadic by nature and it’s rare that they join groups or are willing to obey orders. That is why when the council called them only 2 classes of HAWKERS swore allegiance to the Master Tacticians while other paths didn’t answer The Call. While Ascetic HAWKERS roam the wilderness and typically specialize in long-range weaponry, HAWKER Transients are pilgrims that move from city to city, working as head hunters.
PERFORMERS — Paktbounds
The PERFORMER is a cultural legacy of the Voidlings. Before arriving to this world, PERFORMERS were spiritual leaders and the closest thing to a ruler among Voidlings was “The Great Performer,” a title once held by Utûl. Two thousand years ago, they worshipped the Great Arbiter, though now their devotion has shifted toward Tezano. As Voidling culture blended with other civilizations, new schools of PERFORMERS began to emerge in other cities. In these places, Performers may pay tribute to other gods, reflecting the spiritual influences of their own homelands.
BREATHTAKERS — Wisedudes
The BREATHTAKERS are a Class of Wisedudes who have focused their study of the strings for the elaboration of war chants. They are divided into two Schools of Thought: The BREATHTAKER Orthodoxi strictly follow the original tradition & only sing Chants that include the string of Will. In contrast, BREATHTAKERS from the Æther create Chants without using Will. Instead, they channel arrhythmic vibrations born of Gravity, Void, and Light. This form of chanting feels less controlled and more “owned,” not by an external entity, but through a deep connection to the Æther, a vast flow of existence, like a world within the world. It’s said that when Gods die, their essence returns to the Æther.
Finally, for the gender distribution I looked at how the world’s population is distributed at the moment: 50.5% male and 49.5% female. Which here translates to 1,515 male Heroes and 1,485 female Heroes.
The last mathematical constraint that we must consider before solving this problem is that Utûl’s Rising has a much smaller population than the other 3 cities. With all this in mind, and manipulating the few independent variables of the equation, we finally found the number of Heroes that will correspond to each combination of characteristics.
The Skill Set of each Heroes will be given by their People, Hometown, Macroclass and Class, while their initial stats will be affected only by their People and Gender. In this way, and although the physical appearance of each of the 3,000 Heroes will be unique, the combination of Skill Sets and Base Stats may correspond to a certain group of Heroes, with differences given by other stuff, such as Traits.
Having said that, and now that you understand the whole enchilada, I proceed to clear doubts about the rarity and frequency of such combinations. This is the exact distribution of Echoes of Cryptalia’s GENESIS Heroes Collection:

As you can see, some combinations are pretty rare or even unique! Nevertheless, although there are indeed some 1/1s, these Heroes are not intrinsecally more powerful, only statistically mor unlikely to be seen throughout The Witness Kingdoms.
